Most people have strong feelings about how they want to live their life. For example, most people know whether they would want to live in vegetative state. If you are one of these people, make sure you create a health care directive and entrust with people who will abide by it.
Health care directives vary by state, so consult with an attorney or health care official. In Minnesota, the form is fairly specific. The named health care agent can make decisions if an individual is unable to make and communicate decisions for themselves.
The form also lists five specific situations where an individual must affirmatively grant the health care agent the ability to make the decision. You can also expressly limit a health care agent’s powers. Generally, if there is no health care directive, an attending physician my consult with a spouse or close relative.
Not only should you create a health care directive, you should discuss it with whomever you give it to. Many forms only grant general powers, and do not discuss specific situations. If you particular requests, be sure to disclose those to your health care agent.
